Construction of the world’s tallest building is well underway, with progress steadily being made on the ambitious project. The Jeddah Tower, located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is set to break records upon completion, with an impressive planned height exceeding 3,280 feet. This will surpass the current tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which stands at 2,722 feet including the spire. The Jeddah Tower is estimated to cost a staggering $1.2 billion to build and will offer a mix of residential, commercial, and office spaces, along with a luxurious hotel and the highest observation deck in the world.

Architects Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill of AS+GG Architecture in Chicago are the masterminds behind the Jeddah Tower project. The tower is a key component of the $20 billion redevelopment of the Jeddah Economic City, previously known as the Kingdom City. The projected completion date for the tower is August 2028, with more than 130 floors planned. The design of the tower draws inspiration from palm fronds, abundant in Saudi Arabia, and symbolizes a fusion of new growth and advanced technology.
Construction work on the Jeddah Tower commenced in 2013 but experienced setbacks, including a pause in 2018 due to the arrest of project leaders during the Saudi Arabian purge from 2017 to 2019. The global COVID-19 pandemic further delayed progress, but work resumed in September 2023, as reported by Dezeen. Despite these challenges, the structure is steadily advancing, reaching “Core Level 69” by August 2025, with the remaining floors following closely behind.
The Jeddah Tower’s innovative design features a spire-like structure with a neo-futuristic aesthetic, showcasing the latest advancements in architecture and engineering. Smith and Gill explained that the tower’s unique geometry, starting as a single tripod form at the base and branching out towards the spire, is intricately tied to its wind performance characteristics. This design concept represents a harmonious blend of natural elements and cutting-edge technology, symbolising progress and innovation.
As the Jeddah Tower continues to rise towards the sky, it is poised to surpass the Burj Khalifa in Dubai by approximately 564 feet upon completion. This significant height difference will solidify its position as the world’s tallest building. The ongoing construction activities have been described as robust, with the entire team dedicated to realising this architectural marvel for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The total cost of the Jeddah Tower project is estimated at $1.2 billion, reflecting the magnitude of this groundbreaking endeavour.
The construction progress of the Jeddah Tower serves as a testament to human ingenuity and ambition, pushing the boundaries of architectural excellence to new heights. The tower’s completion will mark a historic milestone in the realm of skyscraper construction, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to innovation and progress on a global scale. As the world eagerly anticipates the unveiling of this extraordinary structure, the Jeddah Tower stands as a beacon of modernity and a symbol of visionary architecture for generations to come.
