Former New York State Trooper Gets Jail Time for Staging Shooting Incident to Impress Ex-girlfriend

A former New York state trooper, Thomas J. Mascia, 28, has been sentenced to six months in jail for orchestrating a fake shooting incident while on duty. Mascia admitted guilt in May to tampering with physical evidence, falsely reporting an incident, and official misconduct, as disclosed by the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office in a press release on October 22.
The fabricated story involved Mascia claiming he was shot in the leg by a “Black or dark-skinned” driver during a traffic stop in October 2024. Subsequent investigations revealed that Mascia had planted .22-caliber shell casings at the scene, shot himself at Hempstead Lake Park, and then returned to report the incident. The rifle used was traced back to his family home.
Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly condemned Mascia’s actions as both meticulously planned and shameful. She expressed how Mascia’s deceit not only wasted valuable law enforcement resources but also betrayed the public’s trust. Mascia admitted guilt to a felony weapons charge and received a five-year probation sentence, while Dorothy Mascia pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor weapons charge and was given a conditional discharge.
