A heartwarming tale of survival and love unfolded in Vermont as Paul Anair, 75, narrowly escaped a fatal cardiac emergency just days before his 49th wedding anniversary with his wife, Sue. The incident took place on September 14 at their Danville residence, where Paul experienced a sudden cardiac issue. Fortunately, the quick thinking and immediate actions of both Paul and Sue played a vital role in saving his life, as reported by the Caledonian Record.

Having previously endured two heart attacks in his 60s, Paul recognised the alarming symptoms and promptly instructed Sue to call for an ambulance. The Caledonia-Essex Area Ambulance Service (CALEX) responded swiftly, arriving at their home just two minutes and thirteen seconds after the distress call. Upon their arrival, Paul, who was experiencing chest pain, soon lost consciousness, prompting immediate CPR administered by CALEX EMT Aidan Brody.
In a moment that mirrored scenes from television dramas, Paramedic Zach Hovan described how Paul was successfully resuscitated after receiving a shock and CPR. Following his stabilisation, Paul was airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for further medical attention. Recollecting the ordeal, Paul expressed gratitude for the prompt response and care he received, especially due to his claustrophobia.
The Anairs reunited with their ‘heroes’ a month later at the Caledonia-Essex Area Services headquarters, where they thanked the CALEX team and Danville Fire Department for their life-saving efforts. Sue commended the community for their swift and effective response, acknowledging them as true superheroes in their time of need. Their timely intervention not only saved Paul’s life but also allowed the couple to celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary at the hospital, surrounded by their loved ones.
Despite not remembering all the details of that fateful night, Paul expressed his relief and gratitude for being granted a second chance at life. As he continues with cardiac therapy and adjusts to a new pacemaker-defibrillator device post-emergency, Paul remains in good spirits. Reflecting on the incident, Sue jokingly noted that Paul still owes her a dinner to commemorate their 49 years of marriage.
The heartwarming reunion captured the Anairs’ profound appreciation for the selfless actions of the emergency responders, who acted swiftly and decisively to ensure Paul’s survival. This story serves as a reminder of the invaluable role played by first responders in preserving lives and reiterates the power of love and resilience in times of adversity.
As the Anairs look towards the future, they do so with renewed gratitude and a deeper appreciation for each other, having weathered yet another storm together. Their enduring love and the unwavering support of their community serve as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the bonds that hold us together in the face of life’s challenges.
