Renowned rock icon Stevie Nicks has recently announced the release of a new Barbie doll inspired by her first solo album, “Bella Donna.” In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Nicks shared her excitement about the collaboration with Mattel for the creation of the doll. The announcement comes after the success of Nicks’ first Barbie Signature doll, which quickly sold out twice. The 77-year-old singer-songwriter expressed her joy over the new doll, especially amidst personal challenges such as evacuating her home during the L.A. wildfires and sustaining a shoulder injury that led to show postponements.
Having already released a Barbie doll inspired by her iconic “Rumours” era, Nicks felt it was fitting to honour her solo debut album with a miniature version of herself. The original Stevie Nicks Barbie, also known as the “Rumours Barbie,” captured the essence of the singer with her tambourine and all-black outfit reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album cover. The new Barbie, however, showcases a different side of Nicks that emerged after the success of “Rumours” – a period that saw her exploring her individuality in the music industry.

Nicks’ “Bella Donna” Barbie reflects the era when she embarked on her solo career, releasing hit singles like “Edge of Seventeen” that are now considered rock classics. The singer emphasized the significance of representing this chapter of her life in doll form, highlighting the connection between her musical journey and the dolls themselves. Describing the dolls as a narrative of her entire musical legacy, Nicks expressed her desire for every iconic outfit she has worn to be recreated as a Barbie doll, although she considers the “Rumours” and “Bella Donna” Barbies as the best representations of her style.
The visual representation of Nicks’ transformation from her “Rumours” Barbie to the “Bella Donna” Barbie captures the essence of her musical evolution and personal growth. The distinct styles of the two dolls, one in black and the other in white, symbolize the duality and progression in Nicks’ artistic journey. The singer affectionately refers to them as the “ebony and ivory,” acknowledging the diverse yet unified aspects of her personality and career portrayed through the dolls.
Reflecting on the transition from her Fleetwood Mac days to her solo ventures, Nicks recalled the creative process behind “Bella Donna,” which marked a departure from the sounds of “Rumours.” The album showcased a fresh sound that incorporated elements of rock and roll, drawing inspiration from artists like Crosby, Stills & Nash and Tom Petty. The new Barbie captures this era of Nicks’ career, embodying the essence of the white-winged dove that sings a song synonymous with her identity as an artist.
As Nicks continues to captivate audiences with performances of her classic tracks from “Bella Donna,” the Barbie dolls stand as symbolic companions that inspire her creatively. She shared her plans to publish a book of photographs featuring the dolls, emphasizing the emotional connection she shares with the miniature versions of herself. Nicks views the Barbies as more than just collectibles; to her, they represent animate reflections of her past, present, and future in the music industry.
