The attorney representing Ellen Greenberg’s parents has strongly criticised the recent reevaluation of her death as a suicide by the Philadelphia medical examiner. Despite the initial ruling of her death as a homicide, which was later revised to suicide, her family is adamant that she was murdered.

In a court settlement reached in February 2025, the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office agreed to review the manner of Ellen Greenberg’s death. Last week, Dr. Lindsay Simon, Chief Medical Examiner, concluded that her 2011 death should be classified as a suicide, a decision contested by her family and supporters who firmly believe otherwise.
Joe Podraza, the Greenbergs’ attorney, has raised concerns about the reevaluation process, alleging that the 32-page report is riddled with omissions and inaccuracies. He insists that a more thorough investigation into Greenberg’s death is warranted, pointing out flaws in Simon’s findings and lack of crucial context in the report.
Podraza specifically disputes a claim in the report that a stab wound in Ellen’s spinal column occurred during the autopsy, a notion he dismisses as unsupported by credible experts. He asserts that the examiner’s review, presented as an ‘independent’ assessment, is fundamentally flawed and appears to serve a preconceived agenda rather than an objective pursuit of truth.
The Greenbergs’ quest for justice for their daughter has garnered attention in the recent Hulu docuseries, ‘Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg?’ The series delves into the mysterious circumstances surrounding Ellen’s death and her parents’ relentless efforts to uncover the real cause behind her tragic demise.
Furthermore, tensions are escalating as a scheduled hearing before Philadelphia Common Pleas Court judge Linda Carpenter looms. The prolonged duration of the reexamination process has added to the frustration felt by Ellen’s family, who remain resolute in their quest for answers.
Podraza is critical of the report’s dismissal of key evidence that contradicts the suicide ruling, such as missing surveillance footage, unexplained injuries, and an expert recreation illustrating the implausibility of self-inflicted wounds. He condemns the report’s portrayal of Ellen’s mental health and personal life as distorted and misleading, and denounces it as an affront to both Ellen and her grieving family.
Highlighting the emotional toll the ongoing investigation has taken on the Greenbergs, Podraza resolutely declares that they will not acquiesce to a narrative they believe to be fundamentally flawed. Despite setbacks in the official investigation, he affirms their determination to seek justice for Ellen through alternative means if necessary.
Ellen Greenberg’s tragic death in 2011, marked by multiple stab wounds and suspicious circumstances, continues to haunt her loved ones as they grapple with the official ruling of suicide. As the legal battle for justice intensifies, the spotlight remains fixed on the enduring quest for closure and accountability in this perplexing case.
