A new statue has been unveiled outside the London hospital where Kate Middleton gave birth, aiming to depict a realistic portrayal of postpartum motherhood. The statue, named “Mother Vérité,” was revealed by parenting brand Frida on the same steps where the Duchess of Cambridge introduced her children to the world.

Frida’s founder and CEO, Chelsea Hirschhorn, expressed the intention behind the statue was to honour the physical changes that come with motherhood and spark conversations about the often unseen challenges faced by mothers. The statue was created by British artist Rayvenn Shaleigha D’Clark, using digital scans of real mothers to accurately showcase postpartum characteristics like stretch marks, scars, and swelling.
Hirschhorn emphasized the importance of presenting the unfiltered truth of the female body through the statue. She highlighted details such as cracked nipples, veined hands, and the postpartum uterus, aiming to celebrate the natural changes that accompany motherhood. The statue’s placement outside the Lindo Wing holds significance, as it is where royal newborns have been traditionally introduced to the public.
The Lindo Wing has seen generations of royal births, with Princess Kate herself experiencing the public spotlight just hours after giving birth to her first child, Prince George. In a candid interview, the Duchess reflected on the mix of emotions she felt while facing the press and the public eye shortly after the birth. She described the experience as both joyful and daunting, navigating the uncertainties of new parenthood under intense scrutiny.
Despite the desire for a return to normalcy after leaving the hospital, Kate admitted to underestimating the profound impact of becoming a parent for the first time. The challenges of adjusting to a new way of life and the unexpected realities of caring for a newborn were revealed through her reflections on that period.
Through the “Mother Vérité” statue, Frida aims to shift the narrative around motherhood away from polished, picture-perfect representations to a more authentic and inclusive depiction. The statue will travel to different locations after its debut, with the ultimate goal of elevating mothers into the recognition they deserve in society’s cultural narrative.
By unveiling this powerful tribute to motherhood outside the Lindo Wing, Frida hopes to challenge societal norms and celebrate the resilience and beauty of postpartum women. The statue stands as a testament to the transformative journey of motherhood, honouring the strength and sacrifices of mothers everywhere.
