According to Chief William Dodge, the police were called to the school around 10:49 a.m. following a report of an adult woman showing signs of being under the influence of drugs. It was a student who first noticed Martin’s unusual behaviour and reported it to school staff. Martin later admitted to the school authorities that she had cocaine in her jacket pocket, which was found in the classroom where she had been teaching.

After removing Martin from the classroom, law enforcement officers brought in a K9 unit, Barre Town K9 Lakota, which detected narcotics in both the teacher’s jacket and backpack. Subsequent testing confirmed the presence of cocaine in a white substance found in her jacket. The police issued Martin a citation for possession of cocaine and reckless endangerment.
Superintendent JoAn Canning of the Barre Unified Union School District indicated that there were personnel steps that needed to be taken regarding Martin’s employment status. A mother of a student in Martin’s classroom expressed concern, stating that her son had witnessed the substitute teacher’s erratic behaviour.
The Barre Unified Union School District has not provided further details about the incident. However, authorities emphasised that any queries regarding Martin’s employment should be directed to the school district. School officials and law enforcement worked swiftly to address the situation and ensure the safety of the students.
The citation issued to Martin highlights the serious consequences of bringing illegal substances into a school environment. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a drug-free and safe educational setting for students. It also underscores the need for vigilant supervision and swift action in response to concerning behaviours exhibited by adults in positions of authority within schools.
