A recent hunting expedition took a dangerous turn for Matthew Alexander of Topsham, Maine, when he unexpectedly found himself trapped waist-deep in mud. The incident occurred off Wharton’s Point in Maquoit Bay on October 1, 2025, leading to a dramatic rescue operation by the Brunswick Police Department.

According to reports from the authorities, the 31-year-old hunter had initially been hunting ducks off an embankment in Maquoit Bay when he decided to retrieve some ducks he had shot. As he stepped onto the mud, he suddenly began sinking and was unable to move. The more he struggled, the deeper he sank into the muddy trap.

Thankfully, Alexander managed to call 911 for help, prompting a swift response from the Brunswick Police Department. Two officers were dispatched to his location, where they utilized an airboat to reach him. Video footage shared by the police department showed the officers pulling Alexander from the mud’s strong suction and safely onto the boat.

Due to the prolonged exposure to the ocean water from Maquoit Bay while trapped, Alexander was immediately taken to a hospital for assessment. Fortunately, he was later released, with authorities confirming that the ducks he had shot were also successfully retrieved.

The Brunswick Police Department highlighted the treacherous nature of coastal mud flats, specifically warning about “honey pots” – areas in the mud that can mimic quicksand. These hidden hazards can ensnare individuals, causing them to sink deeper as they struggle to free themselves.
