A mother in Florida has spoken out after her 6-year-old son was subjected to what she describes as a “racist” birthday song sung by his teacher. The incident took place at Floral Avenue Elementary School in Bartow, where the teacher reportedly sang offensive lyrics during the class celebration.

Desarae Prather, the mother of the boy named Legend, expressed her shock and disappointment over the incident, stating that the song sung by the teacher was racist and hurtful. In a video shared with CBS affiliate WTSP, the teacher is heard singing, “Happy Birthday to you. You live in the zoo, you look like a monkey, and you smell like one, too.”
While some students in the class laughed along, Legend admitted that the song made him feel upset. His mother, Prather, received the video via email and was appalled by the teacher’s actions. She emphasized that no child should have to endure such humiliation, especially at the hands of an authority figure.
The school district, Polk County Public Schools, has initiated an investigation into the incident following the public outcry. District officials released a statement addressing the concerns raised by the mother and the community. They underlined the importance of respecting students from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Despite calls for disciplinary action against the teacher, Stephanie Yocum, president of the Polk Education Association, revealed that the teacher in question has not been suspended and has even faced death threats.
