Pete Buttigieg Responds to Tucker Carlson’s “Fake Gay” Conspiracy Theory
In a recent interview on Channel 5 with host Andrew Callaghan, Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and current Cabinet secretary, addressed the conspiracy theory put forward by right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson.
During the interview, Buttigieg, who made history as the first openly gay Cabinet secretary and is raising two children with his husband, responded with a sense of optimism tinged with irony to Carlson’s allegations that he’s “fake gay.” Carlson had suggested that Buttigieg’s sexuality must be “totally fake” because he was purportedly “dating women just a few years ago.”
Buttigieg chuckled at the accusations, remarking, “I mean, in a weird way, I guess it’s progress?” He shared his past fears of coming out and how he had once worried that his sexuality would be a “career-ender.”
The 43-year-old politician reflected on a time when he would have gone to great lengths to hide his true identity, expressing that he would have even considered conversion therapy if he thought it would change who he was. However, Buttigieg has since embraced his identity and overcome those fears.
Having come out in 2015 while serving as a mayor, Buttigieg met his husband, Chasten Glezman, on a dating app and the couple tied the knot in 2018. In 2021, they welcomed their adopted twins, Penelope and Gus, into their family.
Throughout his journey, Buttigieg has faced challenges and prejudice but has emerged as a prominent figure in American politics. He highlighted the irony of being accused of being “secretly straight” by a right-wing personality, reflecting on the progress made in society’s acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals.
By sharing his personal struggles and triumphs, Buttigieg’s response to Carlson’s conspiracy theory serves as a testament to his resilience and unwavering commitment to authenticity.
As Buttigieg continues to navigate the political landscape, his willingness to address such baseless accusations with grace and humour underscores his dedication to advocating for equality and acceptance for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation.
