In a miraculous journey of survival, baby Eloise fought against all odds after being born weighing a mere 14 ounces. Exclusive to PEOPLE, her parents, Julia and John Thompson, candidly share their rollercoaster of emotions – from excitement to sheer panic.

Julia and John were no strangers to the challenges of conceiving, having tried for years before finally getting the news of expecting their little one. With a history of losses and undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), the couple cherished every moment of Julia’s pregnancy with Eloise.

However, their joy turned to anxiety when Eloise’s early arrival became imminent. At just 18 weeks, concerns of preeclampsia arose as Eloise measured small during an anatomy scan. The couple’s journey took a tumultuous turn as they braced themselves for the unknown ahead.
As Julia’s pregnancy progressed, the couple faced continuous challenges, with Eloise not growing as expected. Doctors warned of an early delivery, putting the Thompsons on high alert. Every milestone became a celebration amidst the uncertainty looming over Eloise’s early arrival.
At just 23 weeks pregnant, Julia’s blood pressure soared, signalling a critical turn in their journey. Diagnosed with severe early preeclampsia, Julia and baby Eloise underwent round-the-clock monitoring to ensure their safety. The countdown was on for the inevitable – Eloise’s early arrival.
A mere 10 days later, Eloise made her grand entrance into the world, marking the beginning of a new chapter filled with hope and challenges. With specialised care at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Eloise embarked on a remarkable journey of resilience and strength.
Under the meticulous care of Dr. Rodica Turcu and the neonatal intensive care team, Eloise battled through her early days with unparalleled courage. Equipped with cutting-edge technology and unwavering dedication, Eloise’s fight for survival was met with round-the-clock care and expertise.
Eloise’s stay in the NICU spanned 106 days, followed by a month and a half in the special care unit before finally heading home. Her remarkable progress, from being fed through IVs to mastering feeding techniques, showcased her unwavering spirit.
With each tiny milestone, Julia and John rejoiced in Eloise’s triumphs, creating their benchmarks of progress amidst the clinical routines. From special treatments to personalised care, Eloise thrived under the watchful eyes of her dedicated medical team.
As Eloise continued to grow and thrive post-hospitalisation, John and Julia navigated the transition to home life with both excitement and trepidation. Their parallel journey of anxiety and elation resonates with many families navigating the challenges of premature birth and neonatal care.
Today, at 9 months old and over 13 pounds, Eloise embodies resilience and hope, a testament to her fighting spirit and the unwavering support of her medical team. John and Julia remain eternally grateful to MGH for their pivotal role in Eloise’s miraculous journey of survival.
