In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Brian May, the legendary guitarist of the band Queen, shared insights into his ongoing estrangement with former bandmate John Deacon. Deacon, the original bass guitarist of Queen, has not performed with the band since 1997, following the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury in 1991.

Despite the passage of time, May revealed that the estrangement with Deacon remains “quite hard,” indicating that both he and drummer Roger Taylor find it challenging. May emphasized that while Deacon prefers to keep his distance, he still plays a significant role in the band’s decisions. May stated, “He wants to be separate. He’s still part of the destiny of the band… If we’re trying to make business decisions, he’s always consulted, but it happens through the management or through our accountant.”

May acknowledged the importance of Deacon’s blessing, stating that even though they do not communicate directly, they know that they have his support. Despite the lack of personal interaction, Deacon is still consulted on important matters concerning the band’s business affairs. May highlighted that Deacon’s opinions are valued, even though he prefers not to be involved creatively, a choice that they respect.
The guitarist further explained that Deacon’s role in the band is unique, as he still has a say in decisions, albeit from a distance. May reflected on their long history together, stating that despite the absence of direct communication, they have a good understanding of each other’s perspectives. This mutual understanding allows for a continuation of the band’s legacy, even in the absence of active collaboration.
Since his retirement, Deacon has maintained a low profile, refraining from public appearances and interviews. This silence contrasts with the enduring presence of Freddie Mercury, who, according to May, feels almost tangible in his absence. May shared that he and Taylor often sense Mercury’s spirit in their discussions, as they imagine his reactions to various situations, keeping his memory alive within the band.
May also revealed that Mercury continues to visit him in dreams, a comforting presence that feels natural and familiar. Despite the years that have passed since Mercury’s passing, his influence on May’s life and music remains strong, with the guitarist acknowledging his enduring impact on both a personal and professional level.
The story of Queen’s enduring legacy is not only defined by their musical achievements but also by the relationships and dynamics within the band. The bond between May, Taylor, Deacon, and the late Mercury continues to resonate through their music and decisions, embodying a sense of unity that transcends personal differences.
In the realm of rock music history, Queen’s journey stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, individuality, and respect for each member’s contributions. May’s reflections on his estrangement with Deacon offer a glimpse into the complexities of maintaining relationships amidst fame and success, highlighting the enduring influence of their shared musical legacy.
