In a tragic turn of events, the remains of four deceased infants were found in a woman’s Pennsylvania rental home after she was evicted. The unsettling discovery was made by the landlord, Brent Flanigan, who evicted tenant Jessica Mauthe, 39, for non-payment. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and ABC affiliate WTAE reported that on September 13th, when Flanigan entered the property to clean up, he detected a foul odour emanating from a trash bag in a closet. To his horror, he found a deceased infant inside the bag and immediately alerted the authorities.

Upon further investigation, two more deceased infants were found in tote bags in the attic of the vacant residence. Jessica Mauthe was subsequently charged with criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse by Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). In a chilling development less than a week later, another set of infant remains was uncovered, bringing the total count of deceased infants to four in Mauthe’s former dwelling.

Mauthe, who is a mother of two boys, confessed to concealing the bodies of three of the infants shortly after giving birth to them in her home. According to a criminal complaint obtained by CBS News and the Post-Gazette, Mauthe admitted to the tragic events that transpired six years ago when she gave birth in her bathroom and tragically discovered the newborn had passed away. She also revealed that she had given birth to two other babies, whose remains she placed in bags and stored within the home.
The harrowing details of the case continue to emerge as Mauthe allegedly never sought medical assistance for any of the infants and did not disclose the incidents to anyone. She has been charged with one count of criminal homicide, one count of involuntary manslaughter, four counts of concealing the death of a child, and four counts of abuse of a corpse. Currently detained in the Armstrong County Jail, Mauthe has been denied bail.
The investigation into this distressing incident is ongoing as authorities work to understand the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths of the infants in Mauthe’s care. The community and law enforcement continue to grapple with the shock and horror of the situation, with many seeking answers and justice for the innocent lives lost.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and awareness within communities to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals, especially children. As details unfold, the impact of this heartbreaking discovery resonates deeply, prompting reflection on the fragility of life and the responsibility we all share to protect those who cannot protect themselves. The tragedy underscores the need for support systems and resources to prevent such devastating situations from occurring in the future.
