A young couple from Santa Maria, California, faced adversity with unwavering determination as they navigated through the challenges of expecting their first child while living in a homeless shelter. Olivia Norman, aged 20, found herself pregnant with no familial support and nowhere to call home. Her boyfriend, Isiah Kurgan, worked two jobs, but their efforts still led them to homelessness, rotating between hotels, sleeping in Kurgan’s car, and relying on friends before seeking shelter in Santa Maria.
As the couple grappled with the uncertainties of their future, Norman took a chance by posting their situation on Facebook in June 2022, seeking a safe place to live as they awaited their child’s arrival. This online plea reached homeowners Gary and Michelle Gorospe, who were touched by Norman’s honesty and offered the couple a room in their family home. Gary, a U.S. Air Force veteran, resonated with the couple’s struggles, having faced his own adversities without much support.

Norman and Kurgan’s stay in the Gorospe’s home transcended a simple living arrangement, as the couple received unwavering support and care, especially during Norman’s battle with postpartum depression after giving birth in September 2022. The Gorospes went above and beyond by assisting with childcare, offering respite for the new parents, and fostering a warm and nurturing environment for the young family.
Despite having children of their own from previous relationships, Gary and Michelle quickly formed a deep bond with Norman’s son, providing the couple with a sense of family and stability during their most vulnerable times. Norman expressed gratitude for the Gorospes’ constant support, acknowledging that they helped her realise the importance of reaching out for help and accepting the kindness of others during challenging times.

After almost two years of living together, the Gorospes decided to move to North Carolina but ensured that Norman, Kurgan, and their son had a safe and stable new home in Guadalupe, California, before departing. To the Gorospes, supporting the young couple in their journey towards building a loving and nurturing family unit was a testament to the transformative power of kindness and community.
Norman, now 23, reflected on their journey, emphasising the vital role of friends who become family and the significance of having a supportive network during difficult times. The story of Norman, Kurgan, and the Gorospe family serves as a poignant reminder that amidst challenges and adversity, kindness and compassion can pave the way for new beginnings and brighter futures.
