Francesca Rapolla, representing the British trade association CPTA, mentioned that industries could potentially seek exemptions from the EU regulations by demonstrating ways to mitigate risks associated with certain ingredients. However, in the case of TPO, the industry failed to provide adequate justification for its continued use in nail products, as alternative ingredients were not sufficiently explored. This lack of defence ultimately led to the ban on TPO in the EU.

Doug Schoon, a scientific expert in the nail industry, highlighted that the risks posed by TPO can be mitigated through proper application techniques. He emphasised that while the removal of TPO from nail products may necessitate reformulation, the performance of these products is not necessarily compromised. It is essential for trained professionals to apply these products correctly to minimise adverse effects, such as skin sensitization or allergic reactions.
