Katherine LaNasa’s ‘The Pitt’ Character Resonates with Real-Life Hospital Staff
Katherine LaNasa, acclaimed for her role as charge nurse Dana in the hit HBO Max series ‘The Pitt’, has been receiving strong reactions from real-life medical professionals. During an interview with PEOPLE at the recent Televerse Festival, the 58-year-old actress shared insights into the responses she has received from nurses, doctors, and other healthcare workers regarding the accuracy of the show.
The medical drama series has struck a chord with medical professionals, as LaNasa revealed, “I think they feel like it’s really accurate.” She further explained that the writing of the show sheds light on various aspects of their work environment, including challenges related to administration, workplace violence, burnout, and fatigue. In her words, “I think people feeling seen is very healing for them. So I think they respond and they really appreciate feeling seen.”
Having drawn inspiration from the nurses who supported her during her own battle with breast cancer, LaNasa has incorporated real-life experiences into her portrayal of Dana. In a heartfelt essay for Women’s Health, she recounted moments of kindness from the nurses who cared for her, expressing how their gestures, no matter how small, made a significant impact on her. These personal encounters have influenced her characterisation on ‘The Pitt’, even leading to a poignant scene involving a warm blanket – a direct reference to her own compassionate encounter during treatment.
Reflecting on her journey as an actress, LaNasa acknowledged the significance of being nominated for an Emmy award for the first time. She emphasised the importance of self-acceptance and contentment, stating, “To be honest with you, I’m just trying to feel like everything is enough. That I’m enough, and my outfit is enough, and my hair’s enough. That the way I look is enough, that what I have to say is enough.”
As she navigates this new chapter in her career, LaNasa aims to embrace the present moment and relish the honour of the nomination. With a sense of gratitude and humility, she is focused on enjoying the recognition while staying true to herself. Season 1 of ‘The Pitt’ is currently available for streaming on HBO Max, with Season 2 scheduled to premiere in January.
