Smirking Tourist Who Jumped Into Rome’s Trevi Fountain’s Smile Drops When Confronted by Police
A tourist visiting Rome got more than he bargained for when he decided to take a dip in the iconic Trevi Fountain. The man’s moment of mischief was short-lived as he was swiftly confronted by local law enforcement. Lukas Vöhser Falcón, a Spanish tourist, captured the whole incident on video during his vacation in the Italian capital.
Falcón recounted the scene, stating, “I was recording a video of the fountain and I saw the man jump in. I think he just did it for fun — but five seconds later the police came and took him.” The man, who appeared gleeful at first, was pulled out of the water by a fellow visitor before a uniformed officer intervened, wiping the smirk off the swimmer’s face.
This daring act is not an isolated incident at the Trevi Fountain. Reports show that earlier this year, an intoxicated visitor was banned for life after taking a similar plunge into the historic landmark. The fountain, which attracts thousands of tourists daily during the summer, holds significant cultural and traditional value. Legend has it that tossing a coin into the fountain ensures a return to Rome.
While the mischievous behaviour of some tourists provides a moment of entertainment, it often comes at a cost. The Rome Capitol Police, responsible for maintaining order at the Trevi Fountain, did not respond to requests for comments on the recent incident. However, authorities have confirmed that several individuals are fined each year for disregarding the regulations set in place to protect this treasured monument.
In a separate incident, earlier this year, three tourists from New Zealand faced consequences after swimming in the fountain. Despite being escorted away, a 30-year-old man from the group defiantly returned to the water. The aftermath saw him receiving a lifetime ban from the site and a hefty fine, highlighting the zero-tolerance approach towards such behaviour.
Tourists have previously attempted to exploit the fountain for personal gain, with reports of individuals trying to steal coins worth millions that are tossed into the waters every year. The money collected from the fountain is donated to charity, underscoring the importance of respecting the site and its significance to both locals and visitors.
The Trevi Fountain’s allure as a must-see attraction in Rome remains undiminished, attracting crowds from around the world. However, incidents like these serve as a reminder of the need for responsible tourism and the importance of preserving cultural heritage sites for future generations. As the city continues to welcome guests, both tourists and authorities must work together to ensure the mutual enjoyment and preservation of these iconic landmarks.
