Bus Monitor Attacked and Allegedly Bitten by Student and Mother
A disturbing incident unfolded in New Orleans where a bus monitor was reportedly attacked by a student and the student’s mother, resulting in the monitor being sent to the emergency room with bite marks. Tamika Jackson, the bus monitor, was involved in an altercation with a student and her mother while on an Orleans Parish school bus, as reported by WVUE on Thursday, August 21. Jackson, who works for a local charter school under InspireNOLA Charter Schools, sustained multiple injuries during the altercation, including bite marks and scratches.
According to Johnny Jackson, Tamika’s husband, the attack on his wife was brutal. He revealed that the assailants not only bit her face, lips, and thumbs but also pulled out her hair and scratched her face, causing a large gash. The incident stemmed from Tamika informing the student that she couldn’t occupy the last two rows of the bus, suspecting inappropriate behavior from the students in that area. The situation escalated when the student’s mother boarded the bus and joined in the altercation.
InspireNOLA Charter Schools responded to the incident by stating that they are actively investigating the matter in collaboration with the school bus company and local authorities, emphasizing the importance of student and staff safety. The altercation, as narrated by Johnny Jackson, involved physical violence directed towards Tamika by both the student and her mother, with disturbing images of the injuries sustained by the bus monitor circulating after the incident.
Video footage obtained by WVUE captured the intense altercation with the bus monitor being physically assaulted by the student and her mother on the bus. Despite another adult presence on the bus, they did not intervene in the violence. The severity of the injuries inflicted on Tamika, including cuts on her lip and face, as well as a bald spot from hair being pulled out, painted a distressing picture of the event.
Johnny Jackson expressed his dismay at the disrespectful and rebellious behavior exhibited by the youth involved in the altercation. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) issued Tamika a municipal court summons in connection to the incident, leading to frustrations from the victim’s husband due to the perceived lack of urgency in handling the case. Johnny’s account indicated that until video evidence surfaces, the NOPD categorizes the incident as a routine fight, despite the evident harm caused to his wife.
The police department, when approached for comment, did not respond to queries regarding the incident, leaving the exact handling of the case unclear. The escalating incidents of violence and disrespect towards authority figures raise concerns about the safety and security of school staff and the need for swift and appropriate measures to address such behavior within educational settings. The aftermath of this distressing incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by those responsible for maintaining order and discipline among students.
