Chino Moreno, lead vocalist and guitarist of the renowned band Deftones, recently shared insights on the long-lost album ‘Eros’. This album was abandoned after their bassist, Chi Cheng, tragically fell into a coma. Speaking to The Guardian in a recent interview, Moreno addressed the question on many fans’ minds: will ‘Eros’ ever be released? The musician candidly stated, “We’re always asked about Eros. It will most likely never see the light of day.”
The album ‘Eros’ was a project the band worked on between 2008 and 2009. The recording process was abruptly halted when Cheng’s car accident left him in a coma, eventually leading to the shelving of the album. Despite some progress on the album musically, Moreno revealed in a previous interview with The Independent that he was unsatisfied with certain aspects of the material. He mentioned that the tragic events surrounding Cheng’s accident brought the ‘Eros’ sessions to a standstill.
Reflecting on the possibility of completing ‘Eros’ with the help of their current bassist, Sergio Vega, Moreno expressed a lack of interest in revisiting the past. He emphasized the band’s focus on creating new music that reflects their present state. Moreno explained, “When we get together, we’re much more fascinated with where we are in this moment, trying to create something new.”
Despite the challenges and emotional weight attached to ‘Eros’, Deftones pressed on and released their tenth studio album, ‘Private Music’. The band’s journey, marked by perseverance and dedication to their craft, continues to resonate with fans worldwide. The legacy of Deftones is not only defined by their music but also by the bonds shared between band members and the enduring spirit that propels them forward.
The loss of Chi Cheng in April 2013 marked a significant moment in the band’s history. His absence serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the indelible impact he had on Deftones and their music. The decision to keep ‘Eros’ unreleased stands as a tribute to Cheng’s memory and the profound influence he had on the band’s creative process.
As Deftones navigate through the ever-changing landscape of the music industry, their commitment to authenticity and artistic evolution remains unwavering. Each album release is a testament to their growth as musicians and individuals. While ‘Eros’ may forever remain a piece of unfinished history, Deftones’ enduring legacy continues to inspire generations of music enthusiasts.
