A young family’s innovative solution to a space crunch saw them invest a substantial amount into converting their garage to comfortably accommodate all members. Shannon Boggs, a mother of three from Eastern Shore, Va., along with her husband, undertook a mammoth renovation project that resulted in each of their children having their own private room. This unique approach allowed the family to stay put in their beloved home, filled with a decade’s worth of memories.
The Boggs family’s once cozy 1,920-square-foot house with three bedrooms and three full bathrooms started feeling cramped as their family grew. Instead of uprooting and searching for a new property, the couple took the unconventional route of converting their attached one-and-a-half-car garage into a master suite with a separate entrance. This transformation not only gave their children individual rooms but also provided the family with the space they needed to thrive.
With two daughters sharing a room for six years, the impending arrival of their third child prompted the Boggs to start contemplating a more long-term solution. The attached garage, already too small to fit a car comfortably, became the focal point for this transformation. Shannon Boggs, 34, shared exclusively with PEOPLE, “Our oldest daughters have been sharing a room for the past six years, so we started looking at houses on the market for a while and just couldn’t find anything we would be happy with compared to where we were at, so we decided on renovation.”
To brainstorm ideas and visualise the conversion, Boggs roped in a creative friend who helped bring their vision to life. A former garage primarily used for storage and laundry was metamorphosed into a spacious master bedroom and en-suite bathroom with added features like a walk-in closet and additional hallway closet. The total cost of this project was approximately £65,000.
The renovation spanned multiple phases, with the initial stage involving the conversion of the dining room into a mudroom and entryway, along with structural changes to connect it to the kitchen and convert a full bathroom into a half bath with laundry facilities. The subsequent phase, the garage conversion, began right after and concluded by late April 2025, unveiling a brand new functional layout for the family.
Despite the upheaval caused by constant contractor activity in their home, Shannon Boggs expressed satisfaction with the end result and the joy it brought to their children. “We have made so many memories here. We looked for a year or two for a place but couldn’t find anything that we really wanted compared to what we have, so we decided on home improvements and making our home the way we want it,” she shared. The children were thrilled to have their own spaces and eagerly set about decorating them to their tastes.
Boggs acknowledged the challenges they faced during the renovation, including enduring workmen in and out at all hours, but the positive outcome made it all worthwhile. The transformation not only enhanced their living space but also solidified their attachment to the home where they had raised their children. The Boggs family’s story is a testament to creativity, perseverance, and a desire to make the most of what you have.
In a world where property prices are soaring, and space is a premium, the Boggs family’s decision to repurpose their existing structure as a solution to their spatial constraints serves as an inspiration to many. Sometimes, the most fulfilling transformations occur within the walls of our home, reshaping our living spaces and enriching our lives in ways we never imagined.
