A 14-year-old boy is on the road to recovery after a scary incident on his first day back at school in Deltona, where he was struck by a vehicle while riding his e-bike. The incident, which took place at the intersection of Howland Boulevard and Roble Lane at around 9 a.m. local time on Monday, August 11, left the teen trapped under the car.

According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO), the teen was attempting to cross the crosswalk on his e-bike when a Kia entered at a low speed, striking him as it turned onto Howland Boulevard. The impact caused the boy to be dragged about 15 feet before the vehicle came to a stop with him trapped underneath.
Thankfully, several witnesses, including a passing tow truck driver, rushed to help. Together, they managed to lift the car off the teen and get him to safety. Despite the ordeal, the teen, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, remained conscious and was airlifted to a local children’s hospital in Orlando for treatment at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.
The sheriff’s office has reported that the teen is currently in stable condition and is expected to fully recover from his injuries. While commending the swift actions of the witnesses who intervened, the VSO issued a safety advisory to both drivers and e-bike riders in light of the incident.
Emphasizing the importance of safe operation and awareness, the sheriff’s office highlighted the growing popularity of e-bikes on roads and sidewalks. They urged riders to always wear helmets and for parents to educate their children on road safety and proper riding habits, such as refraining from using phones or earbuds while cycling.
Furthermore, drivers were reminded to avoid distractions and exercise caution, especially in school zones, residential areas, and at intersections. As e-bikes can travel at higher speeds than traditional bicycles, it is crucial for motorists to remain vigilant and be prepared to share the road responsibly.
In the aftermath of this frightening incident, the Deltona Traffic Unit is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and prevent similar incidents in the future. Education and awareness are key in ensuring the safety of all road users, particularly as new modes of transportation like e-bikes gain popularity.
As the community rallies around the young boy during his recovery, the incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of road safety and the potential dangers that can arise, even in seemingly routine situations like a commute to school. The swift response of the witnesses in lifting the car to save the teen’s life is a testament to the power of collective action in times of crisis.
In conclusion, this heartwarming story of strangers coming together to rescue a young boy highlights the best of humanity in the face of adversity. It is a reminder for all road users to exercise caution, be prepared, and look out for one another to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our communities.
