Several Disney Plus shows have faced the axe, leaving fans disappointed. Despite the success of new hits like “Eyes of Wakanda,” “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” and “Ironheart,” the streaming platform has bid farewell to some beloved series. The cancellations have not been limited to lesser-known shows, but have also impacted popular titles, including those based on iconic books and comic series.
One of the casualties of the cancellation spree on Disney Plus is the adaptation of R.L. Stine’s famous book series, “Goosebumps.” Despite premiering in October 2023 and accumulating an impressive 75 million viewing hours in the U.S., the horror-comedy anthology series was dropped after its second season. Notable names such as Justin Long, David Schwimmer, and Rachael Harris were part of the cast, making it a fan favourite. Even though “Goosebumps” won’t be returning to Disney+, there are talks that the series may find a new home under the production of Sony Pictures Television.
Another show that fell victim to the cancellation wave is the animated series “Primos,” which followed a biracial and bilingual family’s life in Los Angeles. After its premiere in July 2024, the show received positive reviews and even earned award nominations. However, despite its initial success, “Primos” will not be renewed for a second season. The show faced criticisms for depicting negative Latinx stereotypes, leading to its premature end after the completion of the first season’s 28 episodes.
Disney+ also decided to discontinue the animated series “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur,” which introduced the first Black teen superheroine to the platform. Despite winning accolades at the 2023 Children & Family Creative Arts Emmys, rumours of its cancellation started circulating in March 2025. Confirmation came when a storyboard artist revealed the show’s fate in a now-deleted post. The production team had known about the cancellation for a while but couldn’t disclose the information earlier, leaving fans disappointed.
Moving on to the UK programming, the comedy series “Extraordinary” starring Máiréad Tyers faced the chopping block in January 2025. The show centered around a character who, amidst a world of superpowers, remained ordinary. Despite leaving viewers on a cliffhanger after two seasons, Disney+ decided not to renew the series for further episodes. The decision to cancel “Extraordinary” left fans and the talented cast and crew disheartened.
In the historical mystery series department, Disney U.K.’s “Shardlake” starring Sean Bean also met its end in January 2025 after just one season. The series, based on C.J. Sansom’s novel, featured an ensemble cast led by Arthur Hughes. Despite the cancellation, the streamer expressed gratitude to everyone involved in bringing the beloved novel to the screen and hinted at potential future collaborations with the cast and crew.
These cancellations have upset loyal viewers who had invested time in following their favourite shows on Disney Plus. Despite the setbacks, the platform continues to introduce new and exciting content for its audience. Fans can only hope that the void left by these cancelled shows will be filled with equally compelling and engaging series in the future, keeping the magic of Disney+ alive for viewers worldwide.
