Daughter fights to save dad with brain cancer from 7,000 miles away
Aiken Eakins, a mother from Southern California, received heartbreaking news in June that her 63-year-old father, who resides in Taipei, Taiwan, had been diagnosed with brain cancer. The diagnosis of glioblastoma left Aiken devastated and feeling powerless, as she lived almost 7,000 miles away in Moorpark, Calif.
The news shattered Aiken’s world, leaving her unable to eat or sleep as she grappled with the reality of her father’s illness. Despite the distance, Aiken delved into research, seeking out treatments and clinical trials not available in Taiwan. Determined to help her father, she began raising funds with the hope of bringing him to the United States for treatment.
Throughout her life, Aiken has shared a special bond with her father, Arthur Tiu. He has always been a pillar of support, offering guidance, encouragement, and love. Despite the physical distance between them, they stayed connected through daily video calls, where they would catch up, share recipes, and bond over the sight of Aiken’s young son, Maverick.
Concerns about her father’s health arose in May when he mentioned experiencing symptoms like trouble spelling and loss of coordination. A neurologist visit and MRI revealed the presence of two brain tumors. Following a surgical procedure to remove one tumor, Arthur received the devastating diagnosis of glioblastoma, with a prognosis of 18 to 20 months to live.
Currently, Arthur is undergoing radiation and chemotherapy in Taipei Medical University Hospital, where he maintains a positive outlook and fighting spirit. Aiken, determined to explore all treatment options, including CAR-T cell therapy and ANK cell therapy, which aren’t readily available in Taiwan, launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her father’s journey.
Facing such a challenging situation, Aiken sees each day as a gift and is grateful for the opportunity to fight alongside her father against his cancer. The ongoing battle serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of cherishing every moment, and Aiken remains hopeful for her father’s recovery.
As Aiken navigates the complexities of her father’s illness from afar, she is driven by love and determination, demonstrating the unwavering commitment of a devoted daughter fighting for her father’s life across continents. Her strength and resilience are a testament to the power of familial bonds in the face of adversity.
