Two Boxing Stars tragically passed away from severe brain injuries sustained at the same event in Tokyo.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on August 2nd at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo when two Japanese boxers, Shigetoshi Kotari and Hiromasa Urakawa, both aged 28, were severely injured in separate fights. Kotari tragically succumbed to his injuries on August 8th, while Urakawa passed away the following day from injuries sustained in his match against Yoji Saito, according to reports from CNN and Sky Sports.
Kotari had undergone emergency brain surgery for a subdural hematoma, a type of bleeding between the skull and brain, immediately after his fight. Similarly, Urakawa also required brain surgery following his match, intensifying the tragedy of the situation.
The World Boxing Organization (WBO) expressed their condolences for the two late boxing stars. In a statement released on Friday, the WBO paid tribute to Kotari, acknowledging him as a warrior in the ring and a fighter in spirit who left the world too soon. They also extended their thoughts and prayers to Kotari’s family, team, and the Japanese boxing community.
Similarly, the WBO honoured Urakawa, recognising the staggering loss that followed Kotari’s passing. The organisation conveyed their deepest condolences to the families, friends, and the Japanese boxing community during this challenging time.
In the wake of these tragic deaths, all Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation title bouts will now be reduced from 12 rounds to 10 rounds as a safety precaution, as reported by CNN. The Japan Boxing Commission plans to convene to discuss safety measures within the industry, indicating a necessary reevaluation of current protocols.
Tsuyoshi Yasukochi, the secretary general of the Japan Boxing Commission, emphasised the organisation’s awareness of their responsibility in managing the sport. He pledged to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of boxers moving forward.
The boxing community is reeling from the loss of these two talented athletes, prompting reflection on the importance of safety measures in combat sports. The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks and challenges inherent in the world of professional boxing.
As investigations continue and discussions on safety protocols ensue, the boxing world is united in mourning the untimely passing of Shigetoshi Kotari and Hiromasa Urakawa. Their legacies as skilled athletes and fierce competitors will be remembered as the community strives to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
