Hiker Rescued from Italian Dolomites Faces £16,000 Bill​

A 60-year-old hiker found himself in a precarious situation in the Italian Dolomites on August 1st when he had to be rescued by a helicopter. Despite warnings of closed trails, the hiker continued his trek and had to be rescued, leading to a hefty bill of £16,000.

The Veneto Alpine and Speleological Rescue (CNSAS) reported that the hiker contacted emergency services stating that he was on the Berti via ferrata and faced falling rocks in his path. After cautioning him to remain in a safe spot, rescue crews swiftly located him and airlifted him to safety within two hours of the distress call.

Following the successful rescue operation, the hiker was presented with a bill of €14,000 (over £16,000) by local health authorities. This significant amount was attributed to the hiker’s non-EU status; had he been from a European Union country, the cost would have been considerably lower.

The mountain rescue service clarified that they do not manage payment requests directly, deferring the billing process to local health authorities and hospitals. The hiker claimed ignorance, stating that he had not seen the warning signs of potential danger along the trail, as reported by Nicola Cherubin, head of rescue in San Vito di Cadore, to The Telegraph. The area had been experiencing continuous rockfalls for two months, rendering it unsafe for passage.

Officials have raised concerns over the frequency of incidents in the Italian mountains this summer. Maurizio Dellantonio, head of the National Alpine Rescue team, revealed a troubling statistic of “eighty-three deaths and five missing in the first month of vacation alone.” The surge in accidents has been attributed to ill-prepared adventurers and an influx of tourists due to record-breaking temperatures and social media influence.

Dellantonio emphasised the importance of adequate preparation and attentiveness while exploring the mountains, urging visitors to heed warning signs and seek information to ensure a safe excursion. Despite the tragedies that have occurred, he maintains that the mountains are a stunning and accessible destination for all, provided that proper precautions are taken.
