Growing up in Auckland, Yelich started her songwriting journey at just 5 years old, crafting “cringe songs” in her journal and singing in choirs. Despite her early interest in music, it wasn’t until 2022 that she released her first single, “Threads,” followed by her debut EP. Over the years, Yelich honed her skills, transitioning from poetry to songwriting, and exploring different aspects of her artistry.

Signed with Mom + Pop, Yelich poured her heart and soul into her latest EP, “Fame Is a Bedroom,” which delves into themes of coming-of-age, navigating relationships, and the complexities of fame. The five-track collection showcases Yelich’s ethereal vocals and introspective lyrics, drawing listeners in with its heartfelt melodies and poignant storytelling.
Reflecting on her personal experiences, Yelich shared that the EP is a cathartic exploration of her emotions and memories, including power imbalances in relationships, the loss of a toxic friendship, and the challenges of growing up in the spotlight alongside her sister, Lorde. Despite Lorde’s fame, Yelich emphasizes the importance of their close bond and shared understanding.
In her interview with PEOPLE, Yelich elaborated on the inspiration behind the title of her EP, revealing that “Fame Is a Bedroom” reflects her emotional journey and the complexities of seeking understanding amidst public scrutiny. She also delved into the themes of age gap relationships, codependent friendships, and the process of healing from past experiences, all of which are deeply intertwined in her music.
Drawing inspiration from artists like Holly Humberstone, Mk.gee, and The Japanese House, Yelich expressed her admiration for artists who bring honesty and vulnerability to their music. Collaborating with songwriters like Skyler Stonestreet and Nick Monson, Yelich crafted a collection of songs that are both personal and relatable, resonating with listeners on a deep level.
As she continues to evolve as an artist, Yelich remains focused on her creative journey and the impact of her music. While she is open to collaborations with fellow musicians like Mk.gee and Ethel Cain, she is dedicated to forging her own path in the music industry and establishing her own unique identity as an artist.
Looking ahead, Yelich hinted at the possibility of releasing more singles and even a full-length album in the future, as she continues to explore new musical avenues and push the boundaries of her artistry. While the idea of performing with her sister remains a dream for Yelich, she remains committed to carving out her own space and staying true to her artistic vision.
