A man has been sentenced to 18 years in state prison for the horrific crime of pushing his girlfriend into an oncoming subway train in New York City, an action that led to the amputation of both her legs. Christian Valdez, 36, admitted to second-degree attempted murder in connection with the shocking incident that took place in 2024, according to a press release from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. The victim, a 29-year-old woman, had to undergo amputation of both legs as a result of the attack.
The dreadful event occurred on March 9, 2024, at the Fulton Street station in downtown Manhattan, where Valdez and his girlfriend were engaged in an argument on the platform of the 2/3 train line. Valdez, in a fit of rage, pushed her in front of an oncoming train. Upon arrival at the scene, responding officers discovered the woman trapped underneath the train. She was rushed to the hospital, where it was determined that both of her legs had to be amputated due to the severity of her injuries, along with suffering rib fractures and a blood clot in her lung.

Following the heinous act, Valdez fled to New Jersey but was later apprehended when he returned to New York City, still dressed in the same outfit he wore during the incident. At the time of the crime, Valdez was on parole for unrelated offenses, as reported by ABC7 NY. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. denounced the attack as a “life-threatening act of domestic violence in our transit system.” He expressed concern for the victim’s permanent physical injuries and emotional trauma while hoping that the legal proceedings bring her a sense of justice.
In light of this distressing incident, it serves as a stark reminder of the harrowing reality of domestic violence that continues to plague society. The emotional and physical scars inflicted by such acts of brutality can have long-lasting repercussions on the victims, requiring extensive support and resources for recovery. Prosecutors emphasised the importance of addressing and combating domestic violence in all its forms to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
