Tomb of What Is Believed to Be a Medieval Knight Was Found Under a Former Ice Cream Shop: ‘Insane’

A fascinating discovery has recently been made in Gdańsk, a city in northern Poland, as archaeologists uncovered what is believed to be the remains of a Medieval knight beneath a former ice cream parlor. The tomb was found under a busy street corner in the city, known for its rich history, on July 8. Researchers from Poland’s Provincial Council for the Protection of Monuments made the astonishing find, shedding light on an intriguing piece of history hidden beneath a modern-day setting.

The grave is estimated to date back to the 13th or 14th century, with the knight believed to have been approximately 5 feet, 6 inches tall and around 40 years old at the time of his passing. Although the coat of arms on the shield has deteriorated over time, researchers are investigating further to determine which noble family or ruler the knight served under.

The excavation site has been under scrutiny since 2023 when a local ice cream parlor, which had been a fixture in the area for 60 years, was sold to developers. According to Polish science outlet Science in Poland, archaeologists from the Polish company ArcheoScan were given the opportunity to explore the site before any new construction could take place.

Prior to finding the knight’s tomb, researchers had already unearthed the remains of a large wooden church, over 200 burial sites, and six tombstones at the location – providing a glimpse into the historical significance of the area. The excavation team, including Sylwia Kurzyńska, expressed their excitement at the ongoing discoveries, with fragments of the knight’s chainmail boot and leggings being among the preserved artifacts. These findings have been carefully documented and preserved, with plans to conduct further analysis to reveal more about the knight’s identity and origin.

The tombstone and skeleton have been relocated to the Archaeological Museum in Gdańsk for continued examination. It is anticipated that additional details about the knight, such as his background and potential lineage, will emerge from the thorough investigation.
