A beloved high school teacher, Harris Levinson, tragically fell 100 feet to his death during a solo backpacking trip along the John Muir hiking trail in California. The 61-year-old teacher from Vashon High School in Seattle was on a long-planned expedition from Whitney Portal to Yosemite National Park, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

According to Inyo County Search and Rescue and the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, the Inyo County Search and Rescue team was alerted by Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park on July 9 about a missing hiker, later identified as Harris Levinson. Levinson had set out for his hike on June 23, with plans to retrieve a food resupply at Onion Valley on June 29. Concern arose when Levinson failed to collect his food cache, prompting a search operation involving helicopters and ground searchers.

Using data from Levinson’s satellite messaging device, ground searchers located his body in the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek, indicating he had suffered a fatal fall. The experienced hiker had plummeted nearly 100 feet into a gully just two miles into his extensive trek, with his body being recovered on July 12, as per SFGate.

Bill Jarcho, a friend of Levinson, reminisced about their last encounter, sharing that Levinson had expressed contentment with his life and a lack of regrets before departing for his hike. Another friend, Carrie McCarthy, revealed that Levinson had died upon impact, sparing him from any suffering. McCarthy highlighted Levinson’s enthusiasm and joy leading up to the hike, underscoring his love for adventure and appreciation for life.

The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office and Inyo County Search and Rescue expressed their condolences to Levinson’s loved ones and acknowledged the collaborative efforts with Sequoia-Kings National Park, Inyo National Forest, and the California Highway Patrol Office of Air Operations during the search operation.
