The father of one of the victims of the tragic Idaho murders, Steve Goncalves, has expressed his deep disappointment over the recent plea deal offered to the suspect, Bryan Kohberger. The Goncalves family, still grieving the loss of their loved ones, publicly denounced the decision of Idaho prosecutors to offer Kohberger a plea deal that would spare him from the death penalty.
“We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho. They have failed us,” Steve Goncalves and his family expressed in a heartfelt message on their family’s Facebook page. The family made it clear that when presented with the possibility of a plea deal during a meeting with prosecutors, it was a resounding “no” from their side.

Kohberger, a former criminology graduate student at Washington State University, stands accused of the quadruple murder of University of Idaho students – Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Maddie Mogen, and Ethan Chapin. The murders took place in November 2022, sending shockwaves through the community. The plea deal would see Kohberger pleading guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and avoiding the death penalty, with a sentence of four consecutive life terms in prison.

Despite the trial being just five weeks away, the unexpected turn of events has left the victims’ families reeling. Steve Goncalves expressed his disbelief at the sudden development, highlighting the lack of consultation with the families in the plea deal process. The family had been actively seeking answers and justice for the past two and a half years, tirelessly pushing for accountability and closure in the face of unimaginable loss.
The Goncalves family’s relentless pursuit of the truth has seen them engage in various activities, from criticising investigative processes to actively participating in the legal proceedings. Their unwavering determination to seek justice for their daughter and her friends has been met with both challenges and small victories along the way.
In a poignant statement, Steve Goncalves reflected on the profound impact of the tragedy on his family and his unwavering commitment to ensuring that justice is served. The family’s quest for closure and their refusal to accept a hasty resolution underscore their steadfast resolve to honour the memory of the lives lost unjustly.
As the legal proceedings unfold and the family navigates the complexities of the justice system, their united front against injustice serves as a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of those left behind. While the road ahead may be filled with uncertainties, one thing remains clear – the Goncalves family will not rest until justice is truly served for their beloved daughter and her friends.
