In a devastating incident on Monday, June 23, 2025, LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng lost his life when he was struck by a vehicle while approaching a separate crash on the 405 Freeway. The tragic event unfolded in the early hours of the morning and was confirmed in a news release by LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell.

During a press conference following the incident, Chief McDonnell revealed that Deng was travelling southbound on the 405 at Getty Center Drive when he witnessed a traffic collision up ahead. Reports indicate that a Toyota pickup had crashed on the freeway, leading to a subsequent collision involving another car that struck the center divider.

According to NBC Los Angeles, Chief McDonnell explained that Deng took immediate action upon recognizing the seriousness of the crash. He activated his rear amber lights to warn oncoming traffic and provide a level of safety for those involved. Tragically, as Deng exited his vehicle and approached the crash site, he was struck by a passing vehicle from behind.
The driver of the truck involved in the initial crash was declared deceased at the scene, while two individuals, including Sergeant Deng, were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Despite efforts to save him, Deng ultimately succumbed to his injuries at UCLA Medical Center, as confirmed by McDonnell.
Deng had dedicated 26 and a half years to the LAPD, serving 17 years in the mental evaluation unit before being promoted to sergeant and assigned to the West LA division two years prior. Described by his colleagues as exceptionally funny and caring, Deng’s impact within the force was profound, as he strived daily to improve the situations faced by his fellow officers and the community they served.
During the press conference, Chief McDonnell praised Deng as a hero who selflessly prioritised the safety of others over his own. Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, expressed condolences and announced that city buildings’ flags would fly at half-staff in honour of Deng. California Governor, Gavin Newsom, also decreed flags at the State Capitol to be lowered in respect.
A poignant procession was held for Sergeant Shiou Deng, demonstrating the deep respect and mourning within the LAPD and the wider community. His legacy as a dedicated officer who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve others will forever be remembered and honoured.
This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the risks and dangers faced by law enforcement officers every day as they courageously work to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their communities. By bravely answering the call to serve, officers like Sergeant Deng embody the true essence of heroism and selflessness.
