A 12-year-old girl was attacked by a shark off the waters of South Carolina on Hilton Head Island on June 17. The preteen sustained non-life-threatening injuries to her right leg and was airlifted to a hospital in Savannah, Georgia. This incident marks the second shark attack in the U.S. in less than a week, highlighting the recent surge in such incidents.

The attack occurred at approximately 12 p.m. local time near a resort on Hilton Head Island. The girl suffered “a leg injury consistent with lacerations typically associated with a shark bite,” as reported by Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue. The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, received immediate treatment from Shore Beach Services and Fire Rescue staff before being transported to a hospital in Savannah, about 40 miles away from Hilton Head.

Authorities reassured that the young girl’s injuries were not life-threatening, providing a glimmer of relief in the midst of a distressing event. First responders at the scene mentioned in an audio call that although the girl was conscious and breathing, she had already lost a significant amount of blood. The wound was described as being on the lower right leg, just below the kneecap.
In a tragic pattern, this shark attack in South Carolina follows closely on another harrowing incident where a 9-year-old girl lost her hand in a shark attack off the coast of Florida just days earlier. Leah Lendel, the young victim from the Florida attack, recalled the terrifying moment she felt something hard biting her while she was snorkeling with her family in Boca Grande on June 11. The subsequent emergency surgery she underwent sheds light on the severe consequences of such encounters.
Shark attacks have been a cause of concern globally, with 47 unprovoked incidents reported in 2024, according to The International Shark Attack File. Maintained by the Florida Museum of Natural History, the database indicates that out of these recorded attacks, four were fatal. Such statistics underline the need for continued vigilance and precautions when engaging in water activities, particularly in areas known for shark presence.
As both victims of recent shark attacks continue their journeys of recovery, these distressing events serve as poignant reminders of the unpredictable dangers lurking in the waters. The resilience displayed by these young girls and the prompt actions of emergency responders highlight the importance of preparedness and swift intervention in critical situations. The communities affected by these incidents stand together in support and solidarity, navigating through challenges with strength and unity.
These incidents also call for increased awareness and education regarding shark habitats and behaviours, emphasizing the significance of coexisting safely with marine wildlife. By fostering a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and implementing effective safety protocols, we can strive towards mitigating risks and promoting harmonious interactions between humans and sharks in coastal regions. The courage shown by the young survivors serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring us to approach the ocean with respect, caution, and appreciation for its awe-inspiring beauty.
