Veteran actor Gailard Sartain, best known for his roles in popular TV show ‘Hee Haw’ and the ‘Ernest’ movie series, has sadly left us at the age of 81. The multi-talented artist, who hailed from Oklahoma, breathed his last in his hometown of Tulsa on Thursday, June 19. His wife of 36 years, Mary Jo Sartain, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he passed away due to natural causes, describing his departure as a result of “silliness”.


Born in Tulsa in the year 1943, Sartain started his journey in the entertainment industry by working as a cameraman for a local TV station before stepping in front of the camera. He made a mark with his portrayal of the wizard Dr. Mazeppa Pompazoidi in the late-night comedy series ‘The Uncanny Film Festival and Camp Meeting’, where he shared screen space with artists like Gary Busey.
Sartain’s career soared when he became a regular cast member on the iconic country music variety show ‘Hee Haw’, a role he held for almost two decades. His talent also shone on other variety shows such as ‘Shields and Yarnell’ and ‘The Sonny & Cher Show’. His big break in the film industry came with his portrayal of The Big Bopper in ‘The Buddy Holly Story’ in 1978, followed by appearances in movies like ‘Mississippi Burning’, ‘The Outsiders’, and ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’.
In 1980, Sartain ventured into the world of comedy with his co-starring role alongside Jim Varney in the first of the popular ‘Ernest P. Worrell’ films. He continued to impress audiences with his performances in various films, including ‘All of Me’, ‘The Grifters’, ‘Getting Even with Dad’, ‘Ali’, ‘The Replacements’, ‘The Hollywood Knights’, ‘The Big Easy’, and ‘The Patriot’.
Reflecting on his illustrious career in an interview with Tulsa World in 2017, Sartain expressed his gratitude for the memorable experiences he had while collaborating with talented individuals in the industry. After his appearance in the film ‘Elizabethtown’ in 2005, he bid adieu to his screen career, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable portrayals and cherished memories.
Aside from his acting pursuits, Sartain dabbled in painting and illustrating, working as an assistant to the renowned illustrator Paul Davis in New York City. His artistic talents added another dimension to his diverse skill set, showcasing his versatility beyond the realm of acting.
