Rock band REO Speedwagon’s former singer, Terry Luttrell, found himself in a car accident recently. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 15, just a day after the band’s final performance at the State Farm Center in Illinois.

Terry Luttrell, who is 78 years old, was reportedly injured after falling asleep at the wheel, resulting in a crash as per The News-Gazette. The accident took place following a memorable farewell show where past and present members of REO Speedwagon came together to celebrate their musical journey.

In an interview with The News-Gazette, Luttrell shared details of the aftermath of the crash. He mentioned that he managed to exit the car after the collision, but the impact caused him to sustain some injuries. Luttrell explained, “The airbag went off and cracked my sternum a little bit.” Despite experiencing back and neck pain, he remained optimistic, stating, “It’s nothing that can’t be overcome.”
Prior to the accident, Luttrell had been engaging with fans and signing autographs after the show. He recounted a hectic schedule that left him with minimal rest before setting off on his journey to St. Louis for a business trip. Luttrell admitted to feeling tired during the drive but did not anticipate the unfortunate event that occurred. He confessed, “I nodded off. I rolled the car over, and I woke up and I was in a cocoon (the airbags).” The vehicle was left severely damaged following the crash.
After the crash, Luttrell was promptly taken to the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, for treatment. Despite the ordeal, he remains resilient and has not yet provided any further statements regarding the incident.
Terry Luttrell’s association with REO Speedwagon dates back to 1968 when he replaced Mike Blair as the band’s lead vocalist. However, he departed from the group in 1972, making way for Kevin Cronin to assume his position. Recently, in September 2024, REO Speedwagon announced the cessation of their tours in 2025 due to unresolved conflicts between frontman Cronin and bassist Hall.
The unexpected car accident involving Terry Luttrell serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of life, especially for music artists and performers. Despite the challenges he currently faces, Luttrell’s resilience and spirit continue to shine through, leaving fans and well-wishers hopeful for his swift recovery and well-being.
As the music icon navigates this difficult period, the music industry and fans alike send their thoughts and prayers to Terry Luttrell for a speedy and full recovery.
