Less than an hour before a couple’s wedding party was scheduled to take photos, the groomsmen realized they didn’t know how to tie their bow ties. By Ashlyn Robinette
As Walker Hartman’s groomsmen were getting ready for his wedding on October 26, 2024, at Knotting Hills Wedding Venue & Resort in Pevely, Missouri, they encountered a major wardrobe problem – none of them knew how to manually tie their bow ties.

While the groom’s black bow tie with gold detailing was pre-tied and easily clipped onto his collar, the groomsmen’s green bow ties were all self-tie. This meant the men had to tie the knots themselves, which posed a problem as none of them had experience with it before.

Hartman recalled the moment when the issue arose, “The day of, we were in the groom’s quarters, and we were all hanging out having a few drinks. As it’s time to get ready, I pull out the box that has the bow ties in it, forgetting that they’re untied,”. The bride, Alexis, had arranged for the groomsmen’s bow ties to match the color of the bridesmaids’ dresses, but the challenge arose when they realized they all needed to be manually tied.
Initially finding humor in their predicament, the groomsmen soon realized the gravity of the situation as time was ticking away. With pictures scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. and the time already nearing 1:15 p.m., panic started to set in among the group.
As minutes passed and with no solution in sight, the groomsmen sought help from older guests at the venue, including the fathers of the bride and groom and even the bride’s uncle, but no one knew how to tie the bow ties. With the clock still ticking and the pressure mounting, the men were left scrambling for a solution.
Amidst the growing tension, Hartman remembered watching a bow tie tutorial on YouTube in the past. As a last resort, he played the tutorial video on the TV, and the groomsmen gathered around to try and learn the art of tying bow ties just in time for the photos.
The situation took a turn as only one groomsman successfully mastered the bow tie knot, quickly becoming the go-to person to assist the rest of the group. Despite the last-minute frenzy, when the groomsmen walked down the aisle, their polished appearance failed to indicate the pre-ceremony chaos they had just navigated.
Looking back, Hartman reflects on the unexpected problem with fondness, “We talk about it all the time. It is a funny memory that we remembered to this day,” he shared. The incident not only created a memorable experience but also added a unique touch to their wedding photos, making them even more special.
Hartman later shared footage and photos of the bow tie fiasco on TikTok, which quickly garnered millions of views and likes. The amusing anecdote added an unexpected twist to their wedding day story, resonating with many online users who found humor in the groomsmen’s last-minute struggle with bow ties.
In the end, the bow tie incident turned into a cherished memory for Walker Hartman and his groomsmen, showcasing how even unexpected mishaps can add a touch of humor and uniqueness to a special day.
Witnessing the groomsmen’s camaraderie and determination to overcome the bow tie challenge further highlights the bond shared between friends during significant life events, turning a potential wardrobe disaster into a heartwarming wedding day tale.
