Matthew Perry, the beloved actor famous for his role in the hit series “Friends,” tragically passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54 due to an accidental drug overdose. His death shocked fans worldwide, leading to an outpouring of grief and tributes. In the wake of his passing, five individuals have found themselves embroiled in legal proceedings linked to Perry’s untimely demise.

Following an autopsy that revealed Perry’s cause of death as resulting from the acute effects of ketamine, alongside other contributing factors like drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine effects, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner concluded their investigation in December 2023. However, the Los Angeles Police Department initiated a formal inquiry in May 2024 to ascertain the origins of the ketamine involved in Perry’s passing.

In August 2024, arrests were made in connection with Perry’s death, with five individuals – including two doctors, Perry’s live-in assistant, and a person dubbed the “Ketamine Queen” by authorities – facing charges related to the actor’s demise. These arrests were met with strong statements from law enforcement officials, with United States Attorney Martin Estrada emphasising that the defendants prioritised profiting over Perry’s well-being.
Among the individuals facing legal repercussions is Jasveen Sangha, referred to as “The Ketamine Queen.” Charged with a range of offences, including conspiracy to distribute ketamine and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, Sangha has been reportedly operating a stash house in North Hollywood, catering to high-end clients and celebrities. Refusing to enter a plea agreement, Sangha’s trial is scheduled for August, with potential penalties including a life sentence.
Another key figure in the case is Erik Fleming, a TV director and former acquaintance of Perry, who admitted guilt to charges of conspiracy to distribute ketamine following his arrest in August 2024. Fleming confessed to providing ketamine sourced from Sangha to Perry’s live-in assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, leading to Perry’s fatal overdose. Facing a potential 25-year prison sentence, Fleming is awaiting sentencing scheduled for November 2025.
Kenneth Iwamasa, Perry’s long-time live-in assistant, also pleaded guilty to his involvement in the chain of events that led to the actor’s death. Admitting to unlawfully administering ketamine to Perry without medical training, Iwamasa faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. His sentencing is set for November 2025, marking a further chapter in the legal aftermath of Perry’s passing.
Dr. Salvador Plasencia, a key player in the case, is charged with multiple counts of distributing ketamine and falsifying records related to the investigation. Allegedly selling ketamine to both Perry and Iwamasa, Plasencia disregarded medical ethics and warnings about Perry’s escalating addiction. With his trial postponed to August 2025, Plasencia has tentatively agreed to plead guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine, potentially leading to a 40-year imprisonment term.
Dr. Mark Chavez, another physician implicated in the case, admitted to conspiracy to distribute ketamine by providing the drug to Plasencia. Exploiting his position to obtain and transfer ketamine through deceitful means, Chavez is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty in October 2024. Facing a possible 10-year prison term, Chavez’s role in the tragic chain of events surrounding Perry’s death underscores the gravity of the situation.
As legal proceedings continue to unfold, the case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of substance abuse and the grave consequences it can have. The interconnected web of individuals involved in Perry’s passing underscores the need for accountability and justice in the face of such tragic circumstances. The impact of Perry’s death reverberates beyond the realm of Hollywood, highlighting the importance of addressing substance abuse and ensuring those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
