A hiker exploring a mountain in Georgia stumbled upon the charred remains of a man during his trek over the weekend. The unsettling find took place on Stone Mountain Park, located just outside Atlanta, where a park visitor alerted the authorities after spotting a burned body under rocks and an overhang on Saturday, May 31, around 8:18 a.m. local time.

The Stone Mountain Park Department of Public Safety spokesperson, John Bankhead, revealed to local news outlets including ABC affiliate WSB-TV, FOX affiliate WAGA-TV, and Atlanta News First that responding officers located the severely burned body of a white adult male, estimated to be in his 20s or 30s. Bankhead noted that the body was discovered in an area of the park rarely visited by tourists, saying, “It’s in an area that visitors usually don’t go to.”
The anonymous hiker who made the grim discovery did not leave his contact details with the authorities. Park officials are urging the individual to come forward to assist with the investigation. While the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has taken charge of the case, the body has been sent for autopsy at the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Bankhead mentioned to WAGA-TV that the area where the body was found had been deliberately concealed behind rocks, creating a secluded spot. Despite the shocking incident, he reassured the public that Stone Mountain Park remains a safe environment overall, emphasizing the rarity of such incidents in a family-friendly setting.
Stone Mountain Park, located approximately 15 miles from downtown Atlanta, is known for its monumental carving featuring three Confederate leaders: Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. Bankhead expressed astonishment over the discovery, stating, “This is the first time, in my knowledge, that something like this has happened, finding a body on top of the mountain.”
David Farmer, a regular hiker at the park, echoed Bankhead’s sentiments, remarking that he had never encountered anything like this during his visits. Emalyn Delgado, another visitor to the park, expressed disbelief at the unsettling find, highlighting the shock and unease pervading the community following the incident.
As investigations unfold, both park officials and visitors alike are coming to terms with the unusual and tragic discovery on the mountain. The Stone Mountain Park Police, currently heading the case, are yet to release further details regarding the ongoing inquiry. The mystery surrounding the circumstances of the man’s death looms large, leaving the community on edge amidst an otherwise serene natural landscape.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as authorities work to unravel the complexities of this disturbing incident in the heart of Georgia’s scenic mountain region. Tragedies like this serve as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the mysteries that can unfold in even the most picturesque of settings.
