In a recent aviation incident, two United Airlines planes clipped wings at California’s San Francisco International Airport, just weeks after a similar occurrence at Washington D.C.’s Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the incident, stating that United Airlines Flight 863 struck the wingtip of United Airlines Flight 877 at around 12:35 a.m. local time on Tuesday, May 6, as Flight 863 was pulling back from the gate. Notably, this incident happened in an area where air traffic controllers did not communicate with the flight crews, as reported by PEOPLE.

United Airlines Flight 863 was en route to Sydney, Australia, with 202 passengers and 16 crew members on board, while United Flight 877 was heading to Hong Kong, China, with 306 passengers and 16 crew members. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and both sets of passengers were able to deplane normally. Despite the incident, United Airlines assured passengers that they were working to accommodate them on alternative flights and prioritizing their safety.
This incident echoes a similar event less than a month ago at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, where two American Airlines planes collided on a taxiway. The FAA confirmed that American Airlines Flight 5490 struck Flight 4522, causing damage to both planes’ winglets. Notably, Flight 4522 was carrying at least five members of Congress who shared their experience on social media. American Airlines grounded both planes for inspection and maintenance, underscoring their commitment to passenger safety.
Aviation incidents like these serve as a reminder of the complexities and potential risks involved in air travel. Following such events, airlines typically conduct thorough investigations, implement safety measures, and provide alternative arrangements for affected passengers. The aviation industry places a high priority on ensuring the well-being and security of passengers and crew members alike, underscoring the stringent safety protocols in place.
In response to the recent incidents, both United Airlines and American Airlines have reiterated their dedication to safety and expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to passengers. These incidents highlight the need for continued vigilance and adherence to strict safety protocols within the aviation sector. As air travel gradually resumes and passenger numbers increase, maintaining the highest safety standards remains paramount for all airlines and regulatory bodies.
Passengers are advised to stay informed about safety procedures, follow crew instructions diligently, and report any concerns during their travel. As the aviation industry navigates these challenges, collaboration between airlines, regulators, and passengers is crucial to enhancing safety standards and minimizing the risk of such incidents in the future. The commitment to safety and security remains a cornerstone of air travel, ensuring a smooth and secure journey for all passengers worldwide.
