In a sad turn of events, the world’s oldest person, Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, has passed away at the remarkable age of 116. Lucas, who was born in 1908, was officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the oldest person alive in January.

According to Brenton Blanchet, a writer-reporter at PEOPLE, Lucas breathed her last on April 30 at the Colégio Santa Teresa in Brazil, where she spent her final days. Her passing was mourned by many, as she was seen as “a symbol of wisdom, faith, and unconditional love for others” by her order.

Having been declared the oldest living person in the world by Guinness World Records after the death of the previous titleholder Tomiko Itooka, Lucas’s longevity was often attributed to her faith. She firmly believed that God held the secret to life and everything in it, a sentiment she shared with LongeviQuest in an interview.
Born in São Francisco de Assis in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 1908, Lucas lived through several significant historical events, such as the silent film era and the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. She led a fulfilling life dedicated to education, teaching Portuguese and mathematics after taking her vows as a nun in 1934.
Throughout her life, Lucas touched the lives of many through her dedication and mission in the classroom. After retiring in 1995, she received a special apostolic blessing from Pope Francis on her 110th birthday in 2018, a testament to the impact she had on those around her.
Lucas’s relatives shared fond memories of her daily routine, highlighting her disciplined lifestyle of prayer, meals, and rest at set times. Described as a cheerful and grateful person by fellow nun Sister Terezinha Aragon, Lucas was also known for her love of soccer, particularly for the Sport Club Internacional, which paid tribute to her after her passing.
As the world mourns the loss of this extraordinary individual, Guinness World Records has now designated Ethel Caterham of Britain as the oldest living person at 115 years and 252 days old. Lucas leaves behind a legacy that transcends time, a testament to a life well-lived in service to others.
The passing of Nun Inah Canabarro Lucas reminds us of the invaluable contributions made by individuals like her, who dedicate their lives to making a positive impact on the world around them. As we honour her memory, let us also celebrate the lessons she imparted through her life of faith, dedication, and love for others.
