Initially a dark chocolate brown energetic pup when Sarah Foster and her husband welcomed him into their home in February 2023, Murphy’s fur gradually transitioned to a light, almost blonde shade over the following months.

Sarah Foster exclusively shared with PEOPLE that while they anticipated Murphy shedding his “puppy coat” and lightening slightly, they were taken aback by the extent of his color change. Despite the unexpected transformation, the affection the family holds for Murphy remains unwavering.

Noticing Murphy’s snout lightening to a lighter brown about a month after his arrival, the family initially attributed it to his Merle heritage. However, as time passed, lighter patches began to appear across Murphy’s body, leading them to believe it was a permanent feature.

By May 2023, Murphy’s fur continued to lighten, with lighter spots emerging all over his body, raising suspicions that something more than just his puppy coat shedding was happening. Cassidy Stranzl, D.V.M., from Dakota Veterinary Center, revealed that Murphy’s drastic fur change is likely due to vitiligo, an autoimmune disorder where the dog’s skin loses pigmentation. Dr. Stranzl emphasized that while vitiligo is more common in breeds like German Shepherds and Doberman Pinschers, it is a very rare condition in dogs and is purely cosmetic, posing no health concerns.

Although the transformation left the family and friends in awe, Sarah Foster highlighted the importance of regular veterinarian check-ups for pets. Dogs with autoimmune disorders may be more prone to developing vitiligo, so early detection and veterinary care are crucial.
