Tina Knowles, the mother of music icon Beyoncé and singer Solange Knowles, has shared insights into the early days of Destiny’s Child in her new memoir, ‘Matriarch’. In the memoir, Tina delves into some of the challenges the girl group faced behind the scenes of their rising stardom, particularly in comparison to their interactions with fellow stars like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson.
Despite Destiny’s Child skyrocketing to superstardom at the turn of the millennium, Tina Knowles revealed that the music industry wasn’t always equitable towards the group. She recounted a particular incident from the year 2000 when Beyoncé and her groupmates, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, and Farrah Franklin, were at Disney World in Orlando, Florida for a show. Simpson, whom Tina described as a “nice person” and a friend to the Knowles family, was also part of the lineup.

During the event, Tina observed disparities in treatment towards Destiny’s Child and Simpson by the event organizers backstage. Simpson, who was part of the show, reportedly received a larger dressing room compared to the quartet, which Tina found peculiar. She noted a distinct difference in the way the organizers interacted with Simpson, using a friendly tone, while appearing strict and dismissive towards the Destiny’s Child members, which left Tina feeling they were perceived as troublesome.
One particular tense moment highlighted in the memoir occurred when Tina’s then-husband and the group’s manager, Matthew Knowles, playfully put on a Goofy costume backstage for the girls’ amusement, only to be reprimanded for it. Tina expressed her frustration at the unequal treatment, especially when police threatened to halt one of Destiny’s Child’s performances if Beyoncé threw anything into the crowd, later even having police officers standing on stage during their set.

In another instance detailed in ‘Matriarch’, Tina recalled a meeting where Sony executives allegedly expressed reservations about her designing outfits for Destiny’s Child, citing concerns that the group’s fashion sense was too distinct and not aligned with the trends set by pop acts like Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, and Christina Aguilera. Tina interpreted these comments as a subtle form of racial bias, with executives implying that the group’s style was “too Black”.
Matthew Knowles stood up for Tina during the meeting, defending her unique designs and asserting that Destiny’s Child’s success was integral to the label’s continued prosperity. Following this encounter, a chance meeting with Britney Spears backstage in Germany provided a validating moment for Tina, as the pop star praised the girls’ outfits and expressed a desire for Tina to design for her as well.
Tina Knowles’s ‘Matriarch’ memoir sheds light on the challenges faced by Destiny’s Child behind the glamour of their rising success, highlighting unequal treatment and racial biases within the music industry. The anecdotes shared by Tina offer a glimpse into the complexities of navigating fame as a Black girl group in a predominantly white-dominated industry.
As Tina Knowles continues to reflect on her experiences and share her journey in ‘Matriarch’, her story serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength required to overcome systemic challenges and achieve success in the face of adversity in the entertainment world.
