An Illinois landlord, Joseph Czuba, aged 73, has been handed a 53-year prison sentence for the murder of his 6-year-old Palestinian-American tenant, Wadee Alfayoumi. The incident occurred shortly after the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks, with Czuba also stabbing the boy’s mother, Hanan Shaheen, who survived the attack. The sentencing was presided over by Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak from Illinois’ 12th Judicial Circuit, as reported by The New York Times.
Prior to the tragic events, Shaheen testified that her family had lived peacefully as tenants in Czuba’s Plainfield home for two years without any issues. However, tensions escalated following the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas in Israel, leading Czuba to demand the family to vacate the premises due to their Muslim faith. This ultimatum was met with a plea for peace from Shaheen, but the situation took a dark turn on Oct. 14, just a week after the initial attacks.

During the harrowing testimony at the trial, Shaheen recounted how Czuba forcibly entered her room and viciously attacked her, inflicting multiple stab wounds. As she sought help by calling 911 from the bathroom, Czuba turned his rage towards young Wadee, stabbing him 26 times and callously leaving the knife lodged in the child’s body. Shaheen revealed in court that Czuba’s assailment was fueled by religious bigotry, as he exclaimed, “You, as a Muslim, must die”.
The court proceedings included the presentation of shocking crime scene evidence, including distressing audio from Shaheen’s desperate 911 call pleading for help. The police testified to discovering Czuba outside the property covered in blood, shortly after responding to the distress call. Jurors, after just 90 minutes of deliberation, reached a unanimous verdict, convicting Czuba on charges of murder, attempted murder, and a hate crime related to the fatal attack.
Prosecutor Michael Fitzgerald highlighted the underlying Islamophobia that motivated Czuba’s heinous actions, linking it to his fear that the conflict in the Middle East would reach his doorstep. The tragic outcome was clear evidence of a hate-fueled crime, where the victims, Hanan and Wadee, were targeted solely based on their Muslim identity.
The conviction of Joseph Czuba serves as a sombre reminder of the real-world consequences of bigotry and intolerance. The sentencing reflects the severity of the crime committed and seeks to bring a sense of justice to the grieving family of Wadee Alfayoumi. Moving forward, it is imperative to address and combat such deep-seated prejudices to prevent further tragedies in our communities.
As the case concludes with the perpetrator facing the consequences of his actions, it is essential for society to reflect on the importance of embracing diversity and respect for all individuals irrespective of their background. The memory of young Wadee Alfayoumi stands as a poignant symbol, underscoring the need for unity and understanding in a world too often marked by division and hatred.
