Family Matriarch, A 99-Year-Old Survivor Who Fled Russia After WWII, Tragically Killed by Driver
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Taibel Brod, a 99-year-old matriarch from Crown Heights, Brooklyn, who had fled Russia after World War II, was fatally struck by an allegedly unlicensed driver. The incident occurred on April 8, as Taibel was crossing Montgomery St. in Crown Heights around 8:30 p.m. She was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center in stable condition but sadly succumbed to her injuries 12 days later on April 20.
The driver, identified as Menachem Shagalow, a 65-year-old man, was operating a 2023 GMC Yukon SUV when the collision took place. He faced charges of aggravated unlicensed operator, failure to exercise due care, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle following the tragic accident.
Taibel, a respected member of the Hasidic Jewish community and a long-time resident of Crown Heights, left behind a large Chabad family, including her five children and numerous grandchildren. Born in Kremenchuk, Ukraine, Taibel’s life took a significant turn after she escaped Russia on a train to Poland following World War II. Her experiences during her youth in Russia instilled in her a remarkable resilience that carried her through life.
Her son, Yosef Brod, shared with the Daily News, “The hardship in her youth in Russia gave her the strength to go forward. She survived communism.” Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding her passing, Taibel’s legacy of strength, kindness, and commitment to her community continues to resonate with those who knew her.
She was known for her selfless dedication to helping others, particularly through her volunteer work at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center. For over 50 years, Taibel tirelessly fed patients at the hospital, embodying a spirit of generosity and compassion that touched countless lives.
