Tina Knowles Shares Inspirational Breast Cancer Journey and Urges Women to Prioritize Mammograms
Tina Knowles, the mother of music icons Beyoncé and Solange, has recently shared her personal battle with breast cancer, shedding light on the importance of regular mammograms. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE magazine for their latest issue, Knowles revealed her unexpected diagnosis of stage 1 breast cancer in her left breast last July.
Despite her initial shock, Knowles decided to speak out about her journey in her new memoir, ‘Matriarch’, aiming to inspire other women to prioritize their health. She emphasised the significance of not neglecting routine screenings, as she herself had missed a scheduled mammogram due to the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Following her diagnosis, Knowles underwent surgery to remove the tumor and opted for a breast reduction. Fortunately, she received a clean bill of health post-surgery and expressed gratitude for detecting the cancer early. Knowles highlighted that her family does not have a history of the disease, including her ex-husband Mathew Knowles, who successfully battled stage 1 breast cancer previously.
In ‘Matriarch’, Knowles shared how her daughters, Beyoncé and Solange, reacted to the news, showcasing unwavering support and positivity throughout her journey. Alongside her bonus daughters, Kelly Rowland and Angie Beyince, they formed a strong support system for Knowles during her treatment.
Knowles’s experience has motivated her to advocate for timely screenings and encourage women to prioritise their well-being. She acknowledged that early detection could have potentially prevented her cancer from advancing to stage 1, underlining the importance of proactive healthcare.
Reflecting on her health journey, Knowles expressed a newfound focus on self-care, including healthier lifestyle choices and weight loss. She aspires to inspire others by demonstrating that facing health challenges does not diminish one’s sense of style and self-confidence.
By sharing her story, Knowles hopes to instil hope and resilience in others facing similar battles, fostering a sense of empowerment and determination. Her message serves as a reminder for women to take charge of their health and not delay essential screenings that could potentially save lives.
