As a prominent figure on the Today show, Jill Martin has always been vigilant about her family’s history of breast cancer. Her mother, Georgette, successfully battled breast cancer in her 40s, while Martin’s grandmother, Shirley, tragically succumbed to the disease when Martin was just 13. Despite her awareness, Martin was taken aback when a genetic test in June 2023 revealed that she had inherited the BRCA2 mutation from her father’s side, giving her a high risk of developing breast cancer.
The shocking discovery led Martin to opt for a preventative double mastectomy. However, during a pre-operative MRI, doctors uncovered a cancerous mass in her left breast, despite clean mammogram and sonogram results just months before. The diagnosis of aggressive stage 2 breast cancer was a devastating blow for Martin, who admits, “If we hadn’t caught it within the year, it would have been incurable. I still find it hard to believe.”

Following the diagnosis, Martin underwent a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, reconstructive surgery, radiation, and a procedure to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes. The arduous journey culminated in November 2023 when she received the news that she was cancer-free. Reflecting on the experience from her home in Southampton, N.Y., Martin expresses gratitude for her recovery and newfound perspective on life.
Despite facing the challenges of cancer, Martin also navigated personal trials, including her divorce from husband Erik Brooks. Determined to thrive post-cancer, Martin shares, “Cancer is more powerful than any of us… I’m more content than ever. A lot of people who have been through any kind of trauma will tell you: It’s like the aperture of a camera lens. Everything snaps into focus.”
Throughout her ordeal, Martin has been vocal about sharing her journey to educate and support others facing similar battles. With nearly 320,000 American women expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, Martin’s advocacy for genetic testing and awareness is crucial in saving lives. Her surgeon, Dr. Elisa Port, acknowledges the impact of Martin’s platform in raising awareness about hereditary cancers.
In addition to her broadcast work, Martin recently launched a loungewear brand, By Jill Martin, with a mission to bring happiness and support to others. Proceeds from select sales benefit the Basser Center for BRCA at the University of Pennsylvania, underscoring Martin’s dedication to cancer research and support. She emphasises the importance of finding joy and purpose in life, even in the face of adversity.
As Martin continues her journey towards healing and wellness, she remains committed to a healthy lifestyle and meaningful contributions to the cancer community. Her resilience and positivity serve as an inspiration to many, embodying the strength and resilience needed to overcome life’s challenges. Through her openness and advocacy, Jill Martin stands as a beacon of hope for those navigating their own cancer journeys.
