Carla Gugino Keeps in Touch with Alan Cumming and Other ‘Spy Kids’ Co-stars
Actress Carla Gugino recently shared with PEOPLE that she maintains connections with some of her fellow cast members from the popular ‘Spy Kids’ movie franchise, including her “dear friend” Alan Cumming. Reflecting on the experience, Gugino expressed her fondness for the collaborative effort that brought them together, noting, “That was such a beautiful experience for all of us, so it’s crazy that it’s been that long.”
Gugino’s reminiscence comes 24 years after the launch of the Spy Kids series in 2001. At the New York City premiere of her latest film ‘The Friend’ on March 24, she revealed her ongoing relationships with co-stars like Antonio Banderas, Tony Shalhoub, and director Robert Rodriguez. The bond they share continues to hold significance for Gugino, who referred to the group as “an amazing group of actors.”
The Spy Kids movies featured Gugino in the role of secret spy mother Ingrid Cortez, alongside Banderas as her husband Gregorio Cortez, and Daryl Sabara and Alexa PenaVega as her children Juni and Carmen. Despite feeling initially unsure about fitting the role of Ingrid due to her age at the time, Gugino trusted director Rodriguez’s belief in her ability to deliver.
As the conversation with Gugino unfolded, she praised the enduring impact of the Spy Kids franchise, noting how it has transcended generations and acquired a timeless quality. She expressed her appreciation for how the movies have organically evolved into a beloved cultural phenomenon that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Transitioning to her current project, ‘The Friend’, Gugino shared insights into her experience working alongside Naomi Watts in a storyline centered on friendship and grief. The film explores the dynamics between the characters played by Gugino and Watts, who find solace in each other following the passing of Bill Murray’s character.
In discussing her collaboration with Watts, Gugino reflected on their longstanding relationship and the opportunity to finally work together. She highlighted the seamless camaraderie they shared on set, underscoring the emotional depth they brought to their characters’ rekindled friendship in the film.
In addition to her human co-stars, Gugino also had positive words for her canine co-star, Bing, in ‘The Friend’. Praising the professionalism and presence of the four-legged performer, she described Bing as not just a co-worker but a standout member of the cast who contributed to the overall positive experience of filming.
As Gugino continues to navigate her career, she remains rooted in the enduring connections she has forged with her colleagues from past projects, such as Spy Kids, while also embracing new opportunities for artistic collaboration and storytelling in projects like ‘The Friend’. Through her work, she embodies a commitment to authenticity and emotional depth that resonates with audiences and peers alike.
