A New York City middle school teacher has recently been arrested on allegations of possessing a significant amount of child pornography. The arrest came after Google reported Ross Lanvin, a 41-year-old middle school teacher, to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in December 2024. Google had flagged 150 images and 90 videos of explicit illegal content on Lanvin’s account, leading to his account being locked.

Following the report from Google, authorities searched Lanvin’s New York City apartment on February 13th. During the search, Lanvin admitted that the Google account in question belonged to him and also confessed to accessing child pornography on electronic platforms in the past. Lanvin has been teaching on and off since 2006, according to the legal complaint.

A subsequent search warrant executed at Lanvin’s Manhattan apartment in February uncovered child pornography on at least one of his electronic devices, as per a news release from the United States Attorney’s Office. Lanvin now faces two charges of possession of child pornography, which includes images and videos of prepubescent minors and minors under the age of 12. These charges carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
In a statement, Matthew Podolsky, the acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, revealed that Lanvin had direct contact with students as a teacher at a Manhattan public school and possessed hundreds of images and videos of child pornography. The investigation into Lanvin is still ongoing, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
Both the U.S. Attorney’s Southern District of New York office and the NYPD were contacted for comment but were not immediately available. It remains unclear whether Lanvin has legal representation at this time. The arrest of a teacher on such serious charges sends shockwaves through the community and raises concerns about safeguarding measures in schools. It serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and reporting any suspicions of abuse or illegal activities involving children promptly.
The case highlights the critical role of technology companies in detecting and reporting potential criminal activities, showing the significance of their efforts in safeguarding vulnerable individuals. As the investigation continues, authorities are focused on uncovering the full extent of the allegations and ensuring justice is served in this distressing case. The impact of such incidents stretches beyond individuals involved, affecting the wider school community and emphasising the need for robust child protection policies.
