Richie Sambora, the renowned rocker, took fans by surprise with a memorable performance at the Rock for Responders Concert held on the USS Iowa in San Pedro, Calif. on Thursday, Feb. 27. The 65-year-old musician joined forces with Orianthi and Bon Jovi guitarist Phil X to perform the iconic Bon Jovi hit, “Livin’ on a Prayer,” in front of a crowd of first responders, military personnel, and emergency management partners along with their families. This special concert aimed to honour the dedicated individuals who serve Los Angeles.

Phil X, who replaced Sambora as Bon Jovi’s lead guitarist in 2016, shared the stage with Sambora, creating a nostalgic moment for fans of the band. The event took place at the Port of LA, offering a fitting backdrop with the retired battleship USS Iowa as part of the Battleship IOWA Museum, commemorating its service during World War II. The night also featured performances by the Kings of Chaos band, including Sammy Hagar, Robin Zander, and Glenn Hughes, among others.

Not a newcomer to supporting military causes, Sambora previously participated in the Rockin’ the Corps concert in 2005, a show organised to express gratitude to U.S. marines and sailors returning from Iraq. Along with Jon Bon Jovi, he also performed “America the Beautiful” at a NYC firehouse shortly after 9/11. In January, Sambora revealed his efforts to contribute to L.A. fire relief by donating proceeds from his single “I Pray” and matching the revenue to support those affected by the wildfires and frontline workers.

Following his departure from Bon Jovi mid-tour in 2013 to focus on raising his daughter Ava amidst a divorce, Sambora continued his music career, releasing singles and albums, sometimes collaborating with Orianthi. Meanwhile, Bon Jovi released the album “Forever” in June. Phil X has been candid about filling Sambora’s shoes in the band, acknowledging the pressure to maintain the integrity of the songs while also infusing his style. He emphasised the importance of staying true to the original solos, like the iconic one in “Livin’ on a Prayer,” while finding his own moments to shine.
The presence of actor Steve Guttenberg and ABC News chief national correspondent Matt Gutman at the concert added to the star-studded evening, with BJ Lange, an Air Force veteran, serving as the event’s emcee. Sambora’s commitment to charitable causes and his enduring connection to his former bandmates showcase his dedication beyond the music industry. Despite the challenges and changes over the years, Sambora’s unwavering support for important causes reflects his genuine character and values.
In conclusion, Richie Sambora’s recent performance at the Rock for Responders Concert not only brought joy to fans with a nostalgic throwback but also highlighted his continued involvement in charitable initiatives supporting military and emergency services. The event served as a reminder of the impact music can have in uniting communities and honouring those who serve tirelessly.
