A tragic incident unfolded on the MacArthur Causeway when a Florida man, Nicholas Devon Robinson, was arrested for causing a fatal crash while allegedly driving under the influence. The harrowing event resulted in the death of 19-year-old Gabriela Alejandra Rios Flores, who was ejected from her parked car during the collision.

According to reports from the Miami Beach Police Department, the incident occurred on Friday, Feb. 21, temporarily closing parts of the roadway between Fountain St. and 5 St. & Alton Rd. Robinson, 24, was driving a silver Polestar Model 2 back from a birthday party at a South Beach bar when the collision took place.
Witnesses and police officers on the scene described Robinson as being “completely unaware” of the gravity of the situation. Despite allegedly driving at an estimated speed of 100 mph in a 40 mph zone, he reportedly showed signs of impairment such as slurred speech, alcohol odor, and bloodshot, watery eyes.
The collision occurred after Robinson swerved, hitting a cement road divider and a Jeep Wrangler where Rios Flores was seated. The impact caused Rios Flores to be ejected from the vehicle, resulting in critical injuries that later proved fatal at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
In a disturbing turn of events, Robinson, while being detained by officers, displayed a lack of awareness of the situation, asking why he was being stopped and even referencing that it was his birthday. Subsequent tests and observations led to his arrest on charges including reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, DUI with serious bodily injury, and vehicular homicide/reckless manner.
The case has garnered significant attention, with prosecutors hinting at the possibility of upgrading the charges to manslaughter during court proceedings. Robinson is currently held at the Metrowest Detention Center on a $200,000 bond, awaiting further legal action.
The tragic loss of Rios Flores, a Florida International University student majoring in communications, has left a void in the community. Her untimely death serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless behaviour on the road and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives.
The incident has sparked conversations about the importance of responsible driving and the severe repercussions of driving under the influence. As the case unfolds, authorities are working to ensure that justice is served for the victim and her loved ones, while also sending a strong message about the dangers of impaired driving.
This devastating event serves as a poignant reminder for everyone on the road to prioritise safety and responsible behaviour behind the wheel, in order to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The community mourns the loss of Gabriela Alejandra Rios Flores and stands united in support of her family and friends during this difficult time.
