A California engineer, Ian Applegate, experienced a shocking medical emergency after a powerful sneeze led to the tearing of an artery in his neck, triggering a stroke that left him in excruciating pain. The 35-year-old father had just settled his 4-year-old son, Jon Cruz, into his car seat and started the car when the sneezing episode occurred.

Describing the harrowing moment, Applegate recalled sneezing three times, with the third sneeze causing a blinding headache and disorientation, making everything spin. He explained, “That was when my whole body started getting pins and needles on my left side. The whole left side of my body had gone numb, I knew I was having a stroke.”

Rushed to the hospital, medical professionals determined that the force of Applegate’s sneeze resulted in a condition known as vertebral artery dissection, a tear in the artery along the spine that supplies blood to the brain. This damage led to the formation of a blood clot, ultimately triggering the stroke that left him struggling with speech and swallowing. Meanwhile, his wife, Jennifer, is eight months pregnant with their second child.
As Applegate battles through therapy and recovery in the hospital, he voiced his fear of sneezing again, mindful of his fragile health condition and the impending birth of his child. Expressing his determination to witness his baby’s arrival, he shared, “I just want to be home in time for the baby’s birth. I’m trying to stay positive and continue my exercises until I get better.”
Applegate’s sister, Vanessa, set up a GoFundMe page to offer support to the family during this challenging time. She acknowledged his efforts in rehabilitation, highlighting the impact of encouraging words and assistance from well-wishers in his recovery journey.
Reflecting on the sudden and unexpected consequences of a seemingly innocuous act like sneezing, Applegate emphasised his newfound caution, stating, “It was a pretty hard sneeze but I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life. I never thought this was possible.” Despite the ordeal, he remains optimistic and determined to regain his strength and be present for his family.
The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of health and the unpredictable nature of medical emergencies. Applegate’s story underscores the importance of cherishing each moment and being mindful of the potential risks even in mundane daily activities.
As Applegate continues his recovery journey, the outpouring of support and well-wishes from the community provides a source of strength and encouragement. His resilience and determination to overcome this adversity reflect a deep commitment to his family and a hopeful outlook towards the future.
In the face of challenges and unexpected setbacks, the Applegate family’s story resonates as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love and support in times of adversity. The journey ahead may be arduous, but with determination and unity, they stand strong in the face of uncertainty, embracing each day with hope and courage.
